Building a better future – new school in Dommeldange

Of the many projects JANS undertakes each year, one build stands out in particular. While it has presented its fair share of challenges, it has also proven to be immensely rewarding: the new school in Dommeldange.

In addition to custom home builds, residential and industrial construction, as well as renovations and extensions, we also frequently work in the public sector, bringing even greater variety to our projects.

Building for tomorrow: innovative and sustainable

The new school in Dommeldange is a prime example of innovation, sustainability and forward-thinking construction. What makes this project truly special is that it has been built entirely from wood and can be easily dismantled if needed.

“The ability to dismantle the building was one of the key requirements in the tender process,” explained Stefan Dederichs, master carpenter and building designer in charge of most of JANS’s timber construction projects. “While other companies might have struggled with this, we were able to meet the specifications exactly.”

Making a plan

François Lafontaine, building and project manager at JANS, also played a key role in bringing the school project to life. One of the biggest challenges he faced was the extremely tight timeline of less than a year.

“Coordinating everything within such a short period while managing design plans, costs and deadlines was a real challenge,” he said. “That makes it all the more rewarding when everything comes together as planned.”

And the plan paid off: the project began in October 2023 and was completed on schedule, just in time for the start of the school year in September 2024.

Harmony and orientation

The three-storey school building is situated on the outskirts of town, blending seamlessly into its surroundings  – a factor we at JANS carefully considered during the planning phase. Each floor features its own colour scheme, helping to create a sense of identity and making it easier for students and staff to navigate the building.

The project is rooted in sustainability and serves as a prime example of innovative, forward-thinking construction – values that are especially important to us. The use of natural materials helps the building harmonize with its surroundings while creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. High standards of functionality and safety have been met, providing an optimal environment for learning. The colour-coded floors not only aid orientation but also foster a sense of identity among students and staff.

Building bridges

Large windows fill the rooms with natural light, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Combining functionality, harmony with nature and the needs of the community, this school stands as a flagship project for JANS – one we are extremely proud of.

Is that all? Not at all! We've also been commissioned to build a new sports hall for the school.
