Situated on the shores of the picturesque Lake Hopfensee, the hotel has long been one of the Allgäu region’s most sought-after destinations. In close collaboration with the client, an idea was developed that went far beyond a simple expansion. Instead, the decision was made to systematically prepare the property for the future by enhancing it architecturally and technically while strengthening its emotional appeal.
Hotel am Hopfensee: A new chapter with lakeside views
Some projects are more than just buildings sites. They are visions that take shape gradually.
For JANS, the complete expansion and redesign of the Hotel am Hopfensee was just such a project.
The result is far more than a simple extension. Every existing room has been comprehensively refurbished and reimagined with a bespoke interior design concept. Generous floor-to-ceiling windows place the true star centre stage: Lake Hopfensee. Internally, we refer to the project as the Gateway to the Lake – a fitting name, as today almost every room offers uninterrupted views of the water and the surrounding Alpine panorama.
At the same time, two additional storeys were added in high-quality timber construction. These new levels house four exclusive chalet suites that blend Alpine character with contemporary luxury. Expansive roof terraces, private pools and private saunas provide intimate retreats that transform every stay into a truly memorable experience.
The communal areas have likewise undergone a comprehensive transformation. Reimagined with an entirely new design concept, the wellness area now offers guests an even more luxurious environment in which to unwind. A further highlight is the new panoramic gym, which introduces a completely new experience to the hotel: the opportunity to exercise while enjoying uninterrupted views across Lake Hopfensee and the surrounding mountain landscape.
As the lead partner responsible for much of the project’s design and construction, JANS played a central role in shaping and delivering the transformation.
In consultation with the client, the company developed a range of bespoke solutions that now define the hotel’s distinctive character – from the timber-framed extension and façade concept to significant elements of the interior architecture, interior and design.
The combination of an elegant Alucobond façade, high-quality timber cladding in a rhomboid profile, a modern standing-seam roof and refined glass balustrades combined with expanded metal detailing lends the hotel a timeless yet distinctive architectural identity.
What is particularly remarkable is that, despite the project’s exceptional scale – encompassing the refurbishment of the existing structure, a complete redesign of the interiors and the addition of a new timber-built storey – it was realised in just five and a half months.

Today, Hotel am Hopfensee presents itself in a renewed form – equipped with state-of-the-art technology, thoughtfully refined in its architecture and prepared for the future. It is a place where the proximity to the lake and the beauty of the Allgäu mountains can be experienced in every detail.
