Impossible? Not for us! Sports hall Dommeldange in just one year

A new sports hall built in just twelve months – from planning and construction to handover? What sounds like an ambitious goal is exactly what JANS achieved in Dommeldange. Commissioned by the City of Luxembourg, JANS delivered a sports hall spanning approximately 900 square metres in just one year. The project stands out not only for its remarkably short delivery time, but also for its well-considered construction approach.

“Public-sector construction projects come with particularly stringent technical and safety requirements, especially when it comes to accessibility,” explains JANS project manager François Lafontaine. “On top of that, we were working to a very tight deadline. The key to success was building trust and maintaining open lines of communication with all the trades involved and the clients.”

A joint effort, a shared success

As general contractor, JANS took the lead in delivering the project, coordinating the various trades, partners and client requirements. Its scope of work covered everything from earthworks, structural construction and outdoor facilities to roofing, cladding, plumbing and heating. “To keep the project on schedule, we addressed potential challenges early on, including the order situation, technical issues and planning problems,” Lafontaine adds.

The project was particularly important for the City of Luxembourg. “I’m delighted that we were able to complete the project so quickly,” says Ben Moes, representing the city authorities. “There was an urgent need for a sports hall in Dommeldange, as the school and sports complex is currently undergoing renovation. We therefore needed to find an alternative at short notice.”

Smart construction, with some special features

Beyond the ambitious timeline, sustainability and flexibility were central to the project. The approximately 900-square-metre sports hall was designed with the future in mind, allowing it to be dismantled if necessary. One example is the heating room, which was built as a prefabricated concrete container that can be reused in other projects. The rainwater management system is another smart feature, helping to regulate water absorption through a retention base.

“Our aim was to deliver a building that combines cost efficiency with high standards of functionality and architectural quality – and that people enjoy using it every day,” adds Lafontaine. Prefabricated sandwich panels are installed in the hall, while wood-wool insulation is used in the ancillary rooms. Highly durable linoleum flooring is designed to withstand the demands of daily sporting activities, and timber cladding in selected areas adds warmth and creates an inviting atmosphere.

The sports hall was officially opened on 7 October. Schoolchildren can now continue their physical education lessons close to their school, without the need to travel to alternative facilities.
